Summer Safety

Water safety is often forgotten when we think about summer safety. It's easy to be distracted and not pay attention to the changing current, but rip tides are a common cause of drowning and should be closely monitored. Click on the photo to find out how to identify a rip ride!

Heat Emergencies

There's no doubt that this Summer has been a hot one, and it's only getting hotter! When you're enjoying yourself outdoors you're typically unaware of how your body is feeling. It's important to take precautions; heat emergencies can be dangerous if left untreated. Below you'll find how to distinguish between heat emergencies as well as necessary First-Aid care if you encounter one.

Care:  Remove victim from heat. Offer sports drink, coconut water, milk or water to drink. Remove excessive clothing. Apply ICE bags to neck, armpits and groin, and call 911 if condition worsens.

We Remember Founder of Safe Sitter® Program, Dr. Patricia Keener

(Click on left photo to learn more about Keener)

Dr. Patricia Keener, founder of the Safe Sitter® nonprofit, passed away earlier this week. Keener spent almost two decades as a pediatric doctor before building the successful Safe Sitter® program in 1980 after a friend of her's lost her child who was in the care of a babysitter. With the program Keener created herself, young adult students learn childhood behavioral knowledge as well as safety and First-Aid preventative measures.

Keener has not only won various awards throughout her lifetime, but has saved the lives of many children during her pediatric career and inadvertently with the Safe Sitter® practices. In honor of Dr. Keener, "Donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to: the Riley Children’s Foundation for the Dr. Patricia Keener Project, address: 30 South Meridian Street, No. 200, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204."

We have taught hundreds of teens with the Safe Sitter® program for years and are proud to be a provider. To further spread Keener's message and honor her, learn more about taking a class with us.
